Through a series of flashbacks a girl, Carol, relives the troubled love affair with her ex-boyfriend, Eric, that drives her to madness and leads to her confinement in a psychiatric institution.
Eric suffers from an emotional disorder that forces him to protect himself against relationships that become too intense and, for this reason, he starts to become violent and aggressive towards Carol, while Carol answers with ever more care, in an effort to resolve the emerging conflict until she still has the possibility of doing so.
When life doesn't give him back to her, she searches for him in the past, through memories, in what 'could have been'...until one day, by chance, the two meet again...is this real? Or is it just her hope that has gradually become so strong that it has supplanted reality itself?
