The Gift Of Love 88 min

This film is a dramatization of a real life event that happened in North Hwanghae Province, North Korea.
Lee Sojung is a woman who has done her best to deal with her husband’s illness and to feed her family. She has done all she could to provide for her husband’s care and to feed her family, and ultimately resorts to selling her own body.
Sojung sheds tears as she watches strangers take her body and feels great guilt and sadness towards her husband, and sheds tears over her own powerlessness.
However, even her small hope is dashed due to the crackdown of the police. ‘Seongju’, who has loaned Sojung some money, gets Sojung out of jail in order to get his money back, has threatened to have her arrested again if she doesn’t offer up her family’s house as payment instead of paying him back in money. Seongju threatens that if this does not happen, not only Sojung but her family would face great punishment from the authorities. On her way back home, she suddently realizes that the day is her daughter Hyoshim’s birthday, and though she cannot prepare a birthday meal for her daughter, she decides to at least try to feed her a full meal, so Sojung stops by the market and busy food and heads home. Sojung ultimately tells a story that she met Kim Jong Un and received ‘gifts of love’ from the Dear Leader – a lie that should not have been uttered by her. With this ‘explanation’, though the family spends a joyful, happy evening…
